Revising for the new psychology specification and unit 2 for AS psychology? If you found my unit 1 predictions helpful hopefully these unit 2 AQA psychology predictions for this May 2017 exam will be too. Firstly just a quick disclaimer to say it is incredibly important you learn everything when it comes to your exams. These predictions are all best guesses and are not necessarily guaranteed to come up so don’t rely solely on them.

I’m doing these predictions a little bit different than previous years as we don’t really have much to work with in terms of past exam data (we have only 1 previous AS psychology exam window which was in 2016). So for these 2017 exams I’m simply going to outline what came up for the 3 main topics (not including research methods) and what the mark allocations were. I’m then going to highlight the questions (in yellow blocks) that didn’t come up at all (or came up as too small a question to be truly excluded).

Covering the new AS unit 2 (7181/2) specification for first teaching from September 2015

When it comes to revision I would learn it all but personally I would give these highlighted topics more focus because if they never made any appearance in the last exam window it may mean there is a greater chance they could appear this time around. That is the basis of my predictions.

Need Last Minute Revision Help For Unit 2 Psychology?

AQA Psychology Unit 2 Predictions May 2017 (AS)

These predictions are for the unit 2 AS psychology paper only and does not look at the A level equivalent students study as part of the full A level. Although they are very similar, the A level version has more topics and currently I’m focusing only on the AS topics as 2017 is the first year students will sit the full A level versions (so I have no history to base those on). These predictions do not include research methods which is another kettle of fish entirely so I’m focusing mostly on the 3 main topics which are approaches in psychology, biopsychology and psychopathology.

  • Approaches in psychology is in PINK
  • Biopsychology is in GREEN
  • Psychopathology is in LIGHT ORANGE.

On the column that says 2016 I have listed all the questions that came up for each topic and what the mark allocation was – so for example you see 3 marks was attributed to both the behaviourist approach and social learning theory while 8 marks was attributed to the cognitive approach. As we go through this we can see that some topics had very few marks allocated to it (for example the definitions of abnormality had 1 mark each) while others had a huge 12 marker on it such as the biological approach to explaining OCD through genetic and neural explanations.

We can also identify the topics which did not come up at all and these are all the topics with YELLOW blocks across both 2017 and 2016. I would personally focus and prioritise these topics first as if they made no appearance last year then its likely they should make some sort of appearance this year. Also – if a question came up worth very little such as 1-2 marks then you can’t really rule that out either as its possible it may now get a bigger question set on it as small mark allocations are negligible in my eyes.

With this all in mind we can really only rule out 8 topics and I would focus on the following more (remember to revise it all however, this is just to guide how you might want to prioritise your revision).

  • The origins of psychology, Wundt, introspection and the emergence of psychology as a science.
  • The emergence of cognitive neuroscience
  • The divisions of the nervous system: central and peripheral (somatic and autonomic)
  • The structure and function of sensory, relay and motor neurons.
  • The function of the endocrine system: glands and hormones.
  • The fight or flight response including the role of adrenaline.
  • Definitions of abnormality (learn them all)
  • The behavioural, emotional and cognitive characteristics of phobias, depression and OCD
  • The behavioural to explaining phobias (two process model)
  • The cognitive approach to explaining depression (Beck’s negative triad + Ellis ABC Model)
  • Biological therapies for OCD: drug therapy.

So these are the topics which made little to no appearance in the last exam window so would be my first port of call when it comes to revision. There is a lot to learn obviously so if you need help or lack notes on these topics check out my unit 2 ebook I’ve linked above which should help you.
